The Dirty Sock Funtime Band Review and Giveaway

Product Info

Beloved by millions of families for their high-energy music videos on the Nick Jr. channel’s Jack’s Big Music Show, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band’s Sock-A-Delic CD and The Dirty Sock Funtime Band DVD showcase the band’s “We show kids that they rock” spirit.

The outrageous popularity of The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is easy to understand from a kids’ point of view, for their shows are interactive spectacles involving rock band, dancers, comedy, and costumes. The band’s six-to-eight members really know how to fill the stage with action: it’s better than a three-ring circus. Each member has his or her own role to play and distinctive personality to project, but they all come together like clockwork. And what a sound! Their music is polyphonic to the max with melodic lines and supercharged rhythms weaving in and out like a great Dixieland band with everyone wailing on the final chorus. The action onstage is as fascinating as a perfectly timed basketball team. The stunning impact of this stage energy is balanced by the cleverness of the compositions and the smartness of lyrics that offer large words and large ideas, all seasoned with the band’s own brand of belly laugh comedy. The singing, the comedy, the playing, the dancing … it all fits together into one big kaleidoscopic thrill.

That same “total entertainment” concept of The Dirty Sock Funtime Band’s live shows comes through loud and clear on the band’s CDs and music videos. Both their Sock-A-Delic CD and The Dirty Sock Funtime Band DVD inhabit a world where anything can happen. Timing is everything for this band, and the timing of the humor and the smartness of the lyrics are only surpassed by the first rate quality of their singing and playing. It seems The Dirty Sock Funtime Band must have a pipeline straight to the cleverest part of a kid’s brain. With an effortless vivacity, the group romps through every style from country and western to funk, rock, and beyond on Sock-A-Delic. The Dirty Sock Funtime Band DVD combines live action comedy, animated videos, and puppetry, plus interactive dance-a-longs and sing-a-longs, to capture and maintain kids’ interest. The DVD is filled with a stunning array of music videos and also includes three pilot episodes for The Dirty Sock Funtime Band TV series.

Known as the highest energy kids’ rock band ever to break out of NYC, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band was voted “Best Kids’ Band” by readers of Time Out NY Kids. According to MTV’s Evan James, the DSFB plays “some of the most innovative and exciting children’s music EVER.” CNN described them as “distinguished by rocking beats combined with silly, visual lyrics (think Muppets take MTV).” FOX News declared, “Find out why kids, parents and critics alike are falling in love with the first real rock band for kids.” Chris Barron, proud parent and lead singer of the Spin Doctors enthused, “Finally, a rock band for kids that really rocks!”

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band recently returned from their first overseas tour, performing for Navy families in Bahrain, Greece, Italy, and Spain, and they have shows scheduled throughout the summer and fall. The band’s next release, in fall 2011, will be an interactive e-book based on their song “Treasure.” November 2011 will see the release of an all-new studio CD.

Sock-A-Delic and The Dirty Sock Funtime Band DVD previously received “soft” releases. Sock-A-Delic is now available online at www.dirtysockfuntimeband.com, amazon.com, and itunes. The Dirty Sock Funtime Band DVD is available exclusively at www.dirtysockfuntimeband.com.

What We Thought

Maggie and I had never seen or even heard of the Dirty Sock Funtime Band before, so this was a treat! The Dirty Sock Funtime band reminds me a lot of the Laurie Berkner Band (also from Nick Jr.) or the Wiggles, except even wackier. The DVD and CD are full of silly stories/songs that sure kept Maggie entertained. The songs are clever and full on funny lyrics. Lots of the music will get your child up and dancing around--even on the DVD. The DVD has 3 different stories plus an extra music CD.  Although Maggie would occasionally get distracted during the talking portions of the DVD, she came right back to the TV anytime the music started up again! We really liked the episode where Stephen is searching for the perfect pet.  If you've got a child under 5, I think they'd love this DVD and CD!

Bambo Nature Diaper Review and Giveaway

I think most of my fans know that we are a cloth diapering, cloth loving kind of family! There are occassions though when I put Maggie in a sposie, like at night She still is an extremely heavy wetter (occassionally even wetting through a disposable diaper!) at night, plus she sleeps for about 13 hour stretches.  I have also found lately that she is holding her urine in until she really has to go and then going a LOT. This sometimes causes her cloth diapers to leak... so we like having sposies on hand for trips out when it might be hard to change her outfit.

I had no idea when I first started cloth diapering about all of the chemicals that go into making most disposable diapers, but after reading about them I really didn't want to put her in disposable diapers anymore. That's why I'm so happy to find a company that makes a disposable diaper that is free of substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, harmful, causing allergy, or locally irritating! They are called Bambo Nature diapers.

Abena certifies that no known substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, harmful, causing allergy, or locally irritating or sensitizing have been added during the production of the raw material or used during production of the finished product: Bambo Nature Premium Baby Diapers. In addition, Abena has successfully passed independent tests from proDERM and the Danish Asthma & Allergy Association which declare that the product poses the smallest possible risk of causing allergies and skin irritation. Bambo Nature products also explicitly list all of the “Product Ingredients” as well as the harmful chemicals and substances NOT within their diaper. (Please see the PDF below “Statement on Ingredients”.) Bambo Nature contains no perfumes, lotions or deodorants. No phthalates, organotins (MBT, DBT, TBT), heavy metals, Cl (chlorine), HCHO (formaldehyde), colophonium, AZO-pigments, PVC, substances known as harmful to health or the environment, known allergens, substances classified as locally irritating, sensitizing, carcinogenic or mutagenic have been added during the production of the raw material or used during production of the finished product. No compounds listed on SVHC (REACH Article 33 (2)) will be present in more than 0.1%. This is a European Union list of Substances of Very High Concern.

In addition, Bambo Nature contains no perfume, odor inhibitors or lotion/moisturizer in order to avoid allergic reactions. The reason is that such lotions may contain allergizing agents that have only been added to prevent odor. Allergies are a growing problem for children and adults alike. Furthermore, babies have sensitive skin, so Abena has been working diligently to develop quality products that do not contain perfume, coloring agents or any other unnecessary additives. So when you choose Bambo Nature you choose to be good to your baby’s skin.

Finding these diapers has made me really happy! I can put a disposable diaper on Maggie now without having to worry about the chemicals I'm exposing her to.  They are also so much better for the Earth! Bambo Nature is 80% biodegradable, more than 3 times as much as other brands.

Of course, having a diaper that is free of harmful chemicals is important, but it's also important to have a diaper that works well! When I pulled the first diaper out of the package, I noticed a different feel to it right away. Honestly, it had a more "natural" feel to it. I don't know any other way to describe it. It is also just slightly thicker than say a Pampers or Huggies diaper.  When wet, the diapers are a little bit larger than other disposable brands (but still not as big as a cloth diaper). The first night we used one of these diapers on Maggie she woke up with it full, but not leaking...and it's been the same every night since. It's really nice because you won't have any of those "beads" you get from other brands leaking out of a wet diaper! I was sent the size 4 diaper becaues Maggie's right on the border of the size 3/4. The size 4 is perfect for nighttime because it gives her a little bit more absorbancy.

Here's a couple of other great points about these diapers:

1. Super soft material
2. No rough edges, no creases or folds. The creases and folds cause irritation or marks to the skin.
3. No elastic waistband. Typically elastic waistbands have creases and folds the cause pressure marks on the hips.
         a. Bambo Nature has a super, super, super soft “ear” that is stretchy. This was designed to avoid the elastic waistband.
4. The Sizes are printed on the diapers. If you have ever used Seventh Generation, you would know that there is no way to differentiate between Size 3 and 4. You would have a drawer or closet with diapers and you and your husband or mom or grandma or babysitter would say which is for day and which is for night???
5. There is blue writing on the product. This is a wetness indicator. The more blurry, the more pee you have.

Whether you choose to use disposables full time or part-time like me, these diapers are a great option and really worth looking into! I think you'll love them!

Buy Them!

You can purchanse these diapers from their website, http://www.bambo-nature.com/. Free shipping on all orders over $50!

Win Them!

Three, yes I said THREE of my lucky fans will each win a pack of these diapers to try out! Just use the easy entry form below. Good luck!

Pognae Baby Carrier Review and Giveaway

What Are Pognae Baby Carriers?

The hottest baby carrier in Asia and Europe is finally making its U.S. debut! Manufactured in South Korea, the Pognae Baby Carrier has become one of the most popular soft structured baby carriers outside of the U.S. Introduce yourself and see why so many have fallen in love with this baby carrier.

The Pognae Baby Carrier is crafted with the same high-quality materials and care you expect from other top-tier baby carrier brands. With its ergonomic design, breathable air mesh shoulder straps, patented mesh cooling vent and shock-resistant support belt, the Pognae Baby Carrier is the most comfortable baby carrier you and your baby will ever wear.

Pognae's patented mesh cooling vent helps you and your baby stay dry and comfortable on warm days. Unzipping the outerlayer lets fresh air flow in through the mesh lining. Conveniently stow the outer layer fabric underneath the vent with the velcro attachments. With a Pognae Baby Carrier, uncomfortable babies are a distant memory.

The attachable headrest with matching style comes standard with every Pognae Baby Carrier. Made with 100% pure cotton fabric, the headrest provides extra padding so that your baby can rest with ease.

Putting your baby in a wrap or carrier can be difficult to do by yourself. The Pognae Baby Carrier's easily adjustable chest strap makes strapping your baby in a piece of cake. The chest strap can be shortened lengthwise and can be adjusted up or down to ensure you're wearing your carrier in the most comfortable position. The ends of the straps are designed to be easily tucked in, so you'll never have to worry about loose straps flapping around.

Each Pognae Baby Carrier comes with an attachable pouch of matching style and is ideal for carrying your personal belongings. The pouch slides easily over the waist band and sits on your hip so you can have easy access to your essentials while carrying your baby.

What I Thought:

Well, first off I'm going to start by saying that I had a HECK of a time picking out my carrier. I mean, they all look so nice. I couldn't decide--do I go with a gender neutral color in case the next baby is a boy, do I go with a solid color that will match outfits better, do I go with MY favorite.....it was SO hard to decide! Ultimately, I decided to go with my favorite carrier, the Venice. It's so pretty--I love the print and colors! The colors/prints are even more stunning in person!

My carrier came in this cute little bag. I really like the bag because it enables me to pack it all up neatly when I'm done using it.

This carrier is super easy to get on AND get Maggie into all by myself--even on my back! We try to walk our dogs a few times every day and I find that putting her in a carrier makes it much easier for me. She enjoys the walk and I have both hands free for the dog leashes!  The carrier works really well to displace the weight just right. It is so much more comfortable to me to carry her in my Pognae Baby Carrier than to just plain carry her with my arms.

One of my favorite features about this carrier is the mesh cooling vent! So many times Maggie would get super sweaty in her other carriers and this lets her get more of a breeze on hot days--or zip it up on cooler days!

We are loving this carrier and it's now my go-to carrier! From walks, to trips to the grocery store or the mall, it is excellent! Easy to use, easy to wear, easy to love! Maggie loves to be in it! In fact, when I put her in it earlier today so I could have Daddy take some pictures for us, she did NOT want to get back out!

Ted Jacobs Back to the Garden CD Review and Giveaway

Who is Ted Jacobs?

Musician/composer Ted Jacobs is dedicated to presenting exquisite acoustic musical settings of the world’s most beloved poetry, and it is with tremendous pride that he announced the September 20 release of his third studio CD, Back to the Garden, a collection of songs based on poems from Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses. More than ten years in the making, this album is a companion to Jacobs’ award-winning recording, A Child’s Garden of Songs.

Ted Jacobs' first two albums, A Child’s Garden Of Songs (1999) and The Days Gone By (2000) were honored with the prestigious Parent’s Choice® Award, with A Child’s Garden of Songs receiving a Parents’ Choice® Silver Honor Award and The Days Gone By taking home a Parents’ Choice® Gold Award. The Days Gone By was additionally honored by Parents’ Choice® as one of their “25 Best Albums of the Last 25 Years.” Both albums also received NAPPA (National Parenting Publications) Gold Awards.

A Bit of Info About Back to the Garden

Throughout his highly celebrated life, Robert Louis Stevenson possessed the unique gift of being able to maintain extraordinarily close contact with the spirit of his own childhood, the result of which was his beloved collection of poetry, A Child’s Garden of Verses. Amid the hustle and bustle of today’s world, children are often deprived of time to dream, and, at the same time, there isn’t much stimulus for reflective thinking to be found in the majority of contemporary children’s music. Back to the Garden affords a perfect antidote to urgent schedules and electronic fascination, providing time and space for children to reflect, dream, and imagine while they nurture their creativity with music that’s an ideal match for Stevenson’s poems. All the singers and players who came together to create Ted Jacobs’ A Child’s Garden of Songs reunited to decorate Back to the Garden with the sounds of uillean pipes, fiddle, penny whistles, mandolin, dulcimer, accordion, and other acoustic instruments. Celtic players of olden times would feel right at home with Jacobs’ original compositions, which also sparkle with contemporary relevance. The resulting collaboration has such a way of lighting up the meaning of the poems that children find themselves memorizing without even realizing they are doing so. The poems are sung exactly as the poet wrote them. Nothing is repeated, nothing is deleted and the singing, both ensemble and solo, rings with artistic integrity and beauty.

Back to the Garden highlights include a waltz-time melody that embraces what may well be Robert Louis Stevenson’s most popular poem, “The Swing.” Listeners will practically taste the spray of the salty ocean and feel the nautical sway of sea chantey rhythms in “My Ship and I.” The lively energy of “The Hayloft” is beautifully contrasted with the nostalgic reflection of “Keepsake Mill,” whose poetry must have impinged on Stevenson’s thoughts during his years of wandering far from his native Scotland. “Autumn Fires” (a rustic, minor key jig featuring fiddle, fife, and children’s voices) is a sure fire favorite. “The Land of Nod,” whose music incorporates instrumental passages that allow plenty of space for contemplation, is another perfect setting of a poem known to millions. “Escape at Bedtime,” a nocturne transporting listeners of any age to another time and place, brings the album to a dreamy conclusion.

It is of interest to note that these poems were written by a man in his thirties who had already composed some of his most famous creations while leading a life fraught with high adventure and challenge. Writing A Child’s Garden of Verses was Stevenson’s way of connecting with childhood memories at a time when adults typically are reflecting on, and sometimes reassessing, their own juvenile experiences from the safety and objectivity of time, often while rearing children of their own. Listening to Back to the Garden is a beautiful way for parents to reintroduce these poems into their own lives.

What We Thought

I was really impressed with this CD! It is one that Maggie and I are definitely able to enjoy together. I found it fun yet soothing at the same time. The music is just beautiful! My favorite was the song Autumn Fires. Autumn Fires is Celtic/Scottish sounding and the song is sung by children.  All of the songs on this CD are just so easy to listen to. Although it is not a lullaby CD, I think it could easily be used as a CD to help children drift off to sleep. Whether you are a huge fan of Robert Louis Stevenson or not, I really think you'll find this CD to be a welcome addition to your music library. Visit http://houseatthecorner.com/music_listen.html to hear samples of the music on this CD and samples from Ted Jacobs' other CDs.

The lyrics to these songs/poems are also included with the CD so it is easy to sing along!

Blooming Bath Review

What is a Blooming Bath?

Blooming Bath is the cute, cuddly and convenient way to bathe your baby. Unlike traditional baby bath tubs, Blooming Bath is made from incredibly soft, plush materials — providing a safe, soft, and unbelievably adorable bathing experience for the most important person in your world.

Product Features:

-super soft and vibrant colors, turquoise and canary yellow are current color options
-dries quickly, either in dryer or hang dry
-stunning and functional
-ideal for photo opportunities
-makes the PERFECT baby shower gift
-unique - one of a kind design, boutique-ish,
-customers have said that it is so soft that their older babies like to play on it on the floor (this was not the intent of the product)

What I Thought

When I first pulled up the website and saw the product, I thought to myself..."this is one of those fancy, yet totally unneccesary baby products." My husband happenned to be sitting with me and he agreed. But as I searched the website longer it hit me--this would have been PERFECT for trips to Grandma's house! See, I always had one of those plastic baby bathtubs, but Grandma didn't have one. Any time I needed to give Maggie a bath there when she was tiny it was SO hard! When I tried to give her a bath in the sink she was sliding all over the place so I had to hold her with one hand (which was still slippery!) and gosh was it hard to try to clean her with the other!

Not only that, but then I got to thinking about how bath time used to be with Maggie, before she could sit up on her own. Giving Maggie a bath in one of those little plastic bathtubs WAS a challenge. I mean, where do you put the tub? I used to put ours in the big bathtub, but let's be honest--that's hard on your back! I put it on our bed when she was very tiny, but once she started splashing that didn't work anymore either! Being able to bathe Maggie in the sink would have been so much easier but then it brought me right back to those same issues we had at Grandma's house. I was SO happy when Maggie was old enough to sit on her own in the big, main bathtub! My back was too!

So, all of this ran through my mind as I'm looking at the website and I thought--I've gotta give this a try! Although Maggie is getting a little big for a bath in the sink, she still fits! Plus, I thought it would be great to give this a try so I'd know if it would work well for Baby #2 who will be here in May 2012!

To put it simply, I'm SO happy to have a Blooming Bath! I wish we'd had one of these when Maggie was tiny. It really would have made my life so much easier. She's able to sit in the sink without slipping and she thought the flower was a lot of fun. Maggie is so big that it was a little hard to wash her hair in the sink (although it could have been done) but washing her body was a breeze. After you're done with the bath, you can toss it in the dryer for 10-15 minutes or hanging it up to dry (like I did). I'm really looking forward to being able to toss the old plastic bathtub and use this exclusively with baby #2!  I think any expectant or new mother would be happy to own one of these!

Eco Fab Mama Review and Giveaway

What is Eco Fab Mama all about?

Eco Fab Mama is dedicated to eco-friendly/family-friendly products. You will only see high quality handmade items. Most items are made by established/well-known WAHM's that have been perfecting their items for a while. You can be rest assured that you will LOVE your products, the products you will find on Eco Fab Mama are products that I would use/do use on my family.

Who Runs Eco Fab Mama?

Veronica is a mother of 2 and a WAHM herself. She has been selling online since 2003, so she's around to stay! She lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

What Eco Fab Mama Sent Me:

1 Toddler ladybug washcloth (cotton, bamboo fleece)
1 Sandwich Bag (Fold N Go--cotton)
1 Regular 8" Mama Cloth in cotton
1 Flannel Baby Wipe

What I Thought:

If you've been reading my blog at all lately, you'd know that mama cloth is one of the new things I've been trying out lately and really liking! Now the I'm pregnant, I'm trying to stock up for postpartum! Obviously I can't really, *really* try them out right now but I did try wearing it as a pantyliner and found it to be really comfy. The print is so cute too and really soft! At a cost of only $5.50, these pads are affordable!

We're always looking for ways to be more thrifty, so the sandwich bag (made by Boutique Little People) has been great! I send it with my hubby for his lunch now. It works great for sandwiches or chips and washes up really well!

I must admit, we hardly have any cute cloth wipes to use for diapers here, so I've been using both the "Peace" and "Ladybug" wipes for diaper changing times. I found that the big one is great for big messes and of course the small toddler washcloth (made by Boutique Little People) works great for wet diapers. It would also be great for cleaning messy faces!

I love the fact that you can go to Eco Fab Mama and come away with goodies made by moms all over! Besides the great stuff she sent me, there are diapers, keychains, hats, necklaces and so much more available on her site! September is her grand openning month! Check out everything she has for sale by going to http://www.ecofabmama.com/ and visiting her on Facebook!

My Name is Handel CD Review and Giveaway

About My Name is Handel

In today’s busy world, the quality of time spent together as a family takes on tremendous importance. Maestro Classics™, winner of more than 45 prestigious awards for its Stories In Music™ CD series, is dedicated to upgrading family time by creating recordings that offer memorable listening experiences for the whole family -- albums where uncompromisingly great performances are woven into enchanting narratives, supplemented by expanded commentary and activities in attractively designed booklets with exquisite illustrations. On August 24th,  Maestro Classics proudly released their eighth CD, My Name is Handel: The Story of Handel’s “Water Music” (Maestro Classics, $16.98, for ages 7+ and families, run time 49 minutes).

My Name is Handel transports listeners to early 18th century London, where George Frideric Handel, the brilliant young German composer, has established residence. Handel’s erstwhile employer, the Elector of Hanover, has just succeeded to the throne of England to become King George I. As a true showman’s response to the announcement of a royal boat trip on the River Thames, Handel composes a suite of dances, hires a boat and 50 musicians, and heads down the river to surprise the King. The music Handel wrote for this occasion has become known as "Water Music," one of the composer’s best-loved works. The story of this tuneful adventure serves as the engaging backdrop for a multifaceted exploration of Handel’s career and a musical response to the question, “How did a German become England’s most famous composer?” With eminent conductor Stephen Simon directing the London Philharmonic Orchestra, renowned Baroque soprano Julianne Baird and baritone James Shaffran, narration by Yadu (a.k.a. Dr. Konrad Czynski), and intriguing observations by Maestro Classics co-founder Bonnie Ward Simon, My Name is Handel is much more than your typical “classical music for kids” CD.

In an age when caring parents choose finely crafted wood toys over plastic, it seems natural for them to also choose musical and artistic products that encourage children to develop discriminating taste. Unfortunately, many recordings of classical music designed for children are done on a budget that does not allow for world-class performances by truly great musicians and singers. The Maestro Classics Stories in Music™ series, however, features thrilling musical performances of the highest adult standards. My Name is Handel is no exception. The London Philharmonic Orchestra plays splendidly under the baton of Stephen Simon, who also presents valuable information that enhances the meaning of the music. Soprano Julianne Baird performs with crystalline clarity and tenderness of expression, and James Shaffron displays his burnished baritone, singing jolly faux-lyrics to the celebrated Hornpipe melody from the Water Music Suite. Narrator Yadu has a gentle, old time style that is always easy to understand and perfectly captures the mood of the text. Listening to him is like listening to a favorite uncle present a well rehearsed family narrative. Maestro Classics co-founder Bonnie Ward Simon’s descriptions of musical life in the London of Handel’s day are as engagingly child-friendly and fun-filled as they are illuminating.

Altogether, there is no detail that has escaped the cultured eyes and ears of the Simon team, including beautiful illustrations by Martin Millard incorporated into a 24-page booklet carefully designed by Bonnie Ward Simon that is filled with information and innovative activities. Additionally, the Maestro Classics™ website (http://www.maestroclassics.com/) contains a wealth of advice and activities designed to help families incorporate classical music into their lives.

Maestro Classics recordings are available at maestroclassics, amazon.com, and other major distributors and retailers. In addition to My Name is Handel, the Stories in Music series includes Peter and the Wolf, The Tortoise and the Hare, The Story of Swan Lake, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Casey at the Bat, and Juanita the Spanish Lobster (also available in Spanish).
What I Thought

Wow! Okay, I have to admit that when I looked at this CD I was thinking it was just another classical music CD. Boy was I wrong! This CD takes you on a great adventure as you learn about George Frideric Handel. I had never heard the name Handel before I listened to this CD (or at least, I don't remember hearing that name), but I have certainly heard a lot of his music! I found it so fascinating to listen to how he got started and when and why he composed his classic Water Music.  The narrator is easy to listen to and really draws you into this story. Paired with beautiful classical music, this CD is a must-have!

I've already passed this CD along to my Grandmother who was eager to listen to it! It would make a great addition to your homeschooling curriculum as well! Now I really want to own the other titles from Maestro Classics!

Buy It!

You can purchase this CD (and others from the Maestro Classics series) at http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.maestroclassics.com/ and at many other retailers.

Win It!

One lucky blog reader will win their own copy of this CD!
