Encouraging Good Behavior
We've all been there before...you're at the grocery store and the next aisle over you hear a child start to throw a temper tantrum. As you round the corner and head into said aisle, there is the child who is now being dragged by the arm by his mother, while she loudly berates him. The thought, "thank goodness that's not my child," has been replaced by, "thank goodness I'm not that kind of mother."
Now, please don't get me wrong. Throwing a temper tantrum anywhere is NOT acceptable in our house, but handling a temper tantrum by, well, having a temper tantrum myself, is never the way I want to address my child's behavioral problems--whether in public or private settings!
When it comes to discipline, I am not a push over. In fact, I have one rule for caregivers of my 2-year old daughter. We do NOT "count to 3" in our house. This is the method of parenting that bothers me the most. My daughter Maggie is given a warning, and then told what the consequence will be if she continues to misbehave. I believe that counting to 3 only teaches children that they can continue to disobey for 3 more seconds. When I tell my daughter that she needs to correct her behavior, it needs to be immediately. If Maggie was running into traffic, I want her to know that when I yell "STOP" she needs to stop immediately, not 3 seconds too late.
Every parent at one point or another will need to address, and hopefully correct, bad behavior. My question for you today is, what do you do about good behavior? You see, I feel that Maggie generally exhibits good behavior, because we have consistently encouraged, rewarded, and cheered her on for her good conduct. It is my belief that if you spend a large portion of your energy on making sure your child knows how important good behavior is to you, you'll spend a lot less time and energy addressing bad behavior.
We use a number of different techniques to encourage Maggie in her good behavior. The first, and my favorite, are random rewards. These are times when we reward Maggie with something tangible when she wasn't expecting it, nor asking for it. For instance, yesterday we went out to dinner as a family. Maggie not only sat in her chair and colored quietly while she waited for her meal, but she also finished all of her dinner. As we headed to the car, to Maggie's delight, I informed her that we had cookies at home and because of her good behavior, she would receive one when we got home. Well, you would have thought I'd promised her the whole bag of cookies! She talked about her cookie all the way home and smiled so big as she gobbled it down before bedtime.
We are also in the midst of potty training in our house. Maggie adores stickers, so we decided to make her a sticker chart. Every time she uses the potty, she gets to put a sticker of her choosing on her chart. I want to let her potty train at her own pace, when she's ready, so I have not been pushing her. Some days she goes in the potty, other times she doesn't. She does however, always remember that she will get that sticker after she goes, and boy does that make her happy!
Another way we reward Maggie is through activities. There are so many fun activities for kids that are also FREE. When Maggie has had a good day, we'll take her to the park, fill up her kiddie swimming pool in the back yard, or bake a batch of cookies together. Last week we decided to paint our toenails together--it was lots of fun for both of us!
Lastly, beyond the tangible rewards we give Maggie, we also shower her with praise on a daily basis. As I notice her being sweet to her brother, cleaning up her toys, obeying promptly, etc., I make it a point to tell her with words and through hugs just how proud I am of her and how much I appreciate her good behavior. I have noticed that the more I praise her for good behavior, the more good behavior I see from her.
If you feel as though you are always correcting bad behavior in your house, I'd encourage you to make it a point to spend a whole week encouraging good behavior. As your child is rewarded for their good behavior, you'll see the bad behavior fade away!

So I will start by saying this book is geared towards kids 3rd grade and up...our oldest is 4. So I knew going into this it might be a hard read for our family. The story sounded fun though and my oldest loves "story time" so I was eager to give it a try!
The book arrived and I asked our oldest if he wanted to sit down and read it. I explained to him that it is a "chapter book" which meant we would just read a little bit each day until we finished it. I showed him the book, and its fun cover and he was ready to give it a try!
We began reading and we made it through chapter 1. I wasn't too sure what my son thought of the book because he had a hard time sitting still, I think for his age a lack of pictures was a bit of the trouble. ;-) However about 3 hours later he asked me if we could read some more of the book. So we sat down and read the next chapter and he said more attentively this time around. So we have continued to read and are about 6 chapters in and we are both really enjoying it.
This book is the classic tale of the rivalry between boys and girls, I think with my son being so young still he doesn't understand that rivalry (girls are still fun friends to him) but we both are getting some good laughs out of the story. It has been so much fun for us to read together and I am looking forward to finishing it with him, and reading it again once he gets older.
The Cootie Kisser Convention on Canterbury Court is ideally for older kids, I would say 7 or up, but if you have a younger one who really loves to read I would say give it a try. Its a cute fun book. Safari Ltd. Animals Review and Giveaway
Maggie was so excited when she pulled these out of the box! She started playing with them right away.
Maggie has a number of other animal figures but honestly, the quality of these animals is SO much better! You can easily tell by the way they look and feel that these replicas are made with high quality materials!

As I said, this app was created geared towards to tween/teen age group. I don't have any children that old yet, but I definitely think that age group will love this app! It gives tweens/teens an outlet for their snarky attitudes! Have you seen this bunny before? I hadn't, but my husband knew all about him. Apparently he's always saying snarky little things--yep, perfect app for your teenagers! Besides adding bunnies, your teenager can also add in text in a number of different colors and fonts to put their attitude into any and all pictures they snap.

Not only would I encourage you to use this app to take pictures of your child on their first day of school, but all the big things leading up to the first day! Back to school shopping, laying out the first day of school outfit the night before, packing lunch--the possibilities and memories are endless!
After using this app to snap some cool pics, you'll want log on to the secure 1st Day website (the1stday.com), where images and albums are automatically synched up from the app! Then, you can create slideshows, add colorful borders and share galleries via email and on Facebook.
Not only is this app great for parents, it's also perfect for teachers! The app is an excellent way for teachers to journal milestones as they upload photos of their room, art projects and events throughout the year and share them with peers and parents.

What We Thought:
Okay, I'm not going to lie--I watched Barney when I was a kid. Boy, it feels good to get that off my chest! I was "too old" for him when my younger sister started watching Barney, but well, yeah, I loved it too. Barney is great because he not only engages children by singing fun songs, but he's teaching educational lessons with them as well! Maggie loves to watch Barney. It was one of the very first preschool shows she started watching and is still one of her favorites! We've loved this new DVD! Maggie has already learned her colors, so lately we've moved onto harder things like teaching opposites. This DVD reinforces the lessons I'm teaching her about opposites, and she has fun while she learns!
It's always a pleasure to add a new Barney DVD to our collection, and I'm sure your kids will love this DVD just like Maggie does!
