Unique Baby Rooms
I don't know about you, but I love having a personalized, unique room for my babies. With my son, we actually ordered his bedding from Australia because we fell in love with this Viking theme that was only available there. Sometimes to get that new, fun look you've gotta look into other countries. I just discovered this store out of the UK called Kidsen and they've got some really neat stuff for nursery decorations!
I love their selection of children's furniture. Look at this neat Trojan Horse Storage bin!
It is so cute and would look great in my son's room! Check out these cute robot cushions:
And I also fell in love with this cow nightlight!
If you're looking for something to make your baby's room stand out from the rest, you'll want to stop by Kidsen!

Pump Strap Review and Giveaway
One of the things I hate about pumping is how much time it eats up. 10 minutes on one side, then switch to the next side for another 10 minutes (I have a double pump but I can not hold them both and turn the machine on/off without making a mess, so I gave up on that!). Sure, I'd watch tv while I did that, but that was all I could do, so it felt like such a waste! I am a multi-tasker. Rarely do I watch TV anymore without my laptop on my lap. So, when I was contacted about reviewing the Pump Strap I was excited to do so!
To put it simply, the Pump Strap was designed to help moms pump hands free, and of course pump both sides at once to cut your pumping time in half!
Now, I have to admit that right as the Pump Strap arrived at my house, my milk supply had FINALLY leveled out. I had an abundance for a long time and was forced to pump frequently for my comfort, so it took me a little while to try this product because I was enjoying my break. We went out on a date Monday night so I finally tried it out.
My experience with the Pump Strap was that it was EASY to use (just wrap it around you, velcro it on, attach the flanges and you're ready to go!), helped me pump in half the time, PLUS I was able to do some blogging work while I pumped! It was great! Did it make me LOVE pumping, well, to be honest, no, but it certainly made the chore a lot easier! It's like hand-washing dishes and finally getting a dishwasher! :)
If you are someone who has to pump a lot (let me say, God bless you and I'm sorry!) having this is a must! You can purchase a Pump Strap for just $24.95 at http://www.pumpstrap.com.
One lucky Thrifty Nifty Mommy reader will also WIN a Pump Strap! Just use the easy Rafflecopter entry form below. Good luck!

It seems that you can never be prepared quite enough for a new babies arrival. I mean you can be prepared, but to really make life easier...well you just keep discovering products along the way that you will later wonder how you ever did without.
With baby #1 and #2 I was given a baby shower and at both I received "Baby Grooming kits". They were items that were just ok. For the most part I found myself tossing many of these items. There were little hairbrushes that really didn't brush, nail clippers that didn't clip and so on. With our first 2 little ones I used the little comb that came with my husbands hair cutting kit and..I must confess I bit their nails, that just seemed to be the best way to trim them.
With baby #3 I was given the chance to review some adorable little items from Japonesque.
I have to say I was a little skeptical, with my past luck with baby grooming products I just wasn't sure how great these would be. Plus they were SO cute...could they really be so adorable and work well? YES they can! I used the penquin nail clippers on our 18 month old and he sat so still the whole time, he just thought the little penquin was so cute, he watched the whole time! The clippers worked great as well. I am always afraid of getting to close to the skin, but I was able to easily position the clippers and they cut so easily! I also have been using the adorable alligator comb on our 18 month old and it just glides through his hair so easily! I love it!! The hair cutting shears are great too! My oldest son had a few stray long hairs from a cut his dad gave him so I used these to trim him up and they work great!!! They are also fun since their case turns them into a giraffe. The baby hippo brush is great too! Our little girl has more hair that either of our boys had so I do brush it after bath time..just so its not a fuzzy mess ;-) and this brush is so soft! I love it!!
The only items I haven't used yet are the first aid scissors and the nail scissors and file. They are adorable as well though! Especially the nail scissors, they look like a kangaroo and the nail file is a baby kangaroo that goes in mama's pouch!!! Adorable!!! I just love these products!
You can purchase any of these items at hqhair.com or drugstore.com and one of you will win a set of these wonderful products for your little one, or gift them to a friend! Please fill out the entry form below for your chance to win, we will leave this open until Friday Oct 12th. Good Luck!

Combi Catalyst Stroller and Shuttle Car Seat Review
I got the infant car seat out of the box and stroller set up (set up was SO easy!!) and then stood back and admired the beauty before me. Lately I have been telling my husband that I finally understand why some men desire a garage filled with a number of different vehicles because with every stroller I review, I desire more and more for my own garage to house LOTS of strollers! They are like a work of art to me, and the Catalyst was no exception. It has such a modern, chic look to it! I also loved the red color in this set. This stroller pushes with ease! I really liked that you can adjust the length of the push handle. Another thing I loved about this stroller is that you can have it lay completely flat (great for sleeping kids and babies!) and of course it can be adjusted to sit up so your children can look out and see the world. Jacob, my 4 month old, really seemed to like laying in this stroller!
Now, most of my readers know that we are a family with 2 young children who generally both need to ride in the stroller. I also just got a brand new infant car seat (to match my double stroller) before my 4 month old, Jacob was born. So I decided, as much as I WANTED to keep this set for myself, it would not get used as much as it deserved, so I wanted to find someone who could really get some use out of it. About a month after my son was born, my sister gave birth to my nephew Levi, and I thought he was the perfect candidate for this set! I called my sister to see if she was interested (and of course, she was!) and she even offered to review it for all of you. So, without further ado, here's what my sister Jen had to say about the Combi Catalyst Stroller and Shuttle Car Seat!
When a parent goes to pick out a
stroller and/or car seat for their child most never think they will
be faced with so many different styles, brands, and accessory
choices. For the past 4 years and for my first two children, I had a
Graco travel system. I choose Graco because frankly, it seemed to be
what everyone else was choosing at the time and my local Target
didn’t really offer any other choices. Don’t get me wrong, it is
a great system and I still use and recommend Graco products. But now
I have my hands on the Combi Catalyst Stoller and Car seat.
I’ll start my review with the car
seat. My son, Levi, who just turned 3 months absolutely, LOVES this
car seat. And I must say, as a Mom whose first priority was safety, I
love it as well. The material used in making the base of the car seat
looks and feels so much stronger and more secure than any previous
car seat I have used. Surprisingly though, it is still very light.
The fabric used on the car seat cleans very easily (I know this
because my 3-year old dripped milkshake on it within the first 24
hours of using it) with a simple damp cloth or baby wipe. Levi fits
very snugly in the car seat as well and perhaps that is why he loves
it so much. My husband can attest that he loves the fact that he can
move the 2nd base (the one you attach to the seat of your
vehicle that holds the car seat itself) easily from our different
vehicles. It clicks very easily into place which makes it great for a
mulit-car family. All in all, I love this car seat and I wish I had
had it for my other two children. Not only does Levi feel secure in
it but I feel secure in knowing that he will be safe when traveling.
It is lighter than seems possible for how well it is made, and the
fabric is very breathable but also very plush.
I would highly
recommend this car seat to anyone!
The Combi Catalyst is first off an
eye catcher. No one can deny that walking your little one down the
street in this stroller makes you feel like a million bucks because
this stroller LOOKS like a million bucks. It is brightly colored and
smartly styled. There are many great features with this stroller, a
few I did not love, but over all a great stroller. I’ll start with
what I liked about it. Aside from its appearance, my favorite feature
is the removable bassinet. Levi has fallen asleep on every walk and
it makes it so easy, once we get home, to just take the bassinet
off, and take him inside without disturbing his sleep. The stroller
also features a very large umbrella top which shields him from the
sun extremely well and the little see-through vent in the back lets
me enjoy watching him sleep. I also love that it has a very big
basket on the bottom for storage. I like to shop the outlet mall so
having a place to put my purse, the diaper bag, and also my shopping
bags is a huge plus! The stroller itself glides very easily and turns
on a dime. One feature my husband loves is that you can adjust the
handle of the stroller itself, which means he isn’t hunched over
pushing our son like he used to be in our old stroller.
There were a few things I would change
if I could about the Combi Catalyst stroller. The stroller itself can
be put in three different locking positions depending on the child’s
age, but I had a very hard time getting it to click into place from
the bassinette position to the 3rd position. I took me a
few tries and a bit of pressure until I finally got it. The other
thing I found difficult was removing the bar that is in place for the
bassinet. Actually I tried a few times but rather than break a
nail, I decided to wait till Levi wasn’t going to be using the
bassinet feature and remove it then. It doesn’t have any cup
holder or areas built in to hold my cellphone or my keys; however
this can be easily solved by buying the accessory attachment.
Lastly, the bassinet and the car seat both do attach to the
stroller, however if you want to use the car seat with the stroller
you have to attach a separate metal piece that holds the car seat in
place and then take it off again if you want to use the bassinet
attachment. Basically what this means is you should decide before you
excursion which feature you want to use – otherwise you will need
to take with you the car seat attachment with you as well.
Overall, I do love the
Combi Catalyst and would recommend it to anyone. Our old Graco has
since been retired to Grandma’s house. I think the Combi
Catalyst stroller is probably most ideal for households with
only one child, or at least only one child that is still using a car
seat. That way you avoid the different steps you will need to take to
adjust it for different aged children. But for now, Levi is in love
and I’m in love with the fact that he does so well with it and that
my husband enjoys using it without throwing his back out. Thank you
Combi for some great features!

New Young Adult Books for Fall
There are some great new titles out this fall for your middle-school aged children to enjoy! Check 'em out!!

From the author of the beloved Babymouse and Squish graphic novel series and the winner of three Newberry Honor books—Our Only May Amelia, Penny from Heaven, and Turtle in Paradise—comes another must read! Ginny has big plans for eighth grade. She’s going to try out for cheerleading, join Virtual Vampire Vixens, and maybe even fall in love. But middle school is more of a roller-coaster ride than Ginny could have ever predicted. Her family has just moved into a fancy new house when Ginny’s stepdad loses his job. (Can worrying about money make you sick?). Ginny’s big brother keeps getting into trouble. And there’s a new baby on the way. (Living proof that Ginny’s mom and stepdad are having sex. Just what she needs.) Filled with Post-its, journal entries, grocery lists, hand-drawn comic strips, report cards, IMs, notes, and more, Eighth Grade Is Making Me Sick is the sometimes poignant, often hilarious, always relatable look at a year in the life of one girl, told entirely through her stuff.
Emily Wiggins is thrilled that she and her orphan friend Jackson have escaped the clutches of the Child-Catching Services and Emily’s villainous uncle Victor. Emily and Jackson are now living happily with her loving aunt Hilda. But just a mighty mouth minute! Someone’s snooping around for an orphan child on the run! He knows Jackson is hiding nearby and aims to get a reward for snatching him and sending him to work at a mill. What in leapin’ livers should Jackson do? And Emily can’t rest easy either, since some sort of creature is coming to their gate when Jackson and Emily are home alone. What in simmering succotash is that moving pile of dirt? Is it a heap of black rags, is it a dusty tumbleweed, no it’s . . . Now what in shaking shivers will happen next?
EIGHTH GRADE IS MAKING ME SICK
by Jennifer L. Holm; illustrated by Elicia Castaldi
The funny, quirky, totally original story of story of Ginny, told entirely through her stuff

Part graphic novel, part scrapbook and altogether original, Eighth Grade Is Making Me Sick is just right for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Babymouse!
Jennifer L. Holm is the author of three Newbery Honor Books—Our Only May Amelia, Penny from Heaven, and Turtle in Paradise—as well as the Babymouse and Squish series, which she collaborates on with her brother, Matthew Holm. She lives in California with her husband and two young children. Jenni survived eighth grade. Barely.

EMILY AND JACKSON HIDING OUT
by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Plucky orphans Emily and Jackson star in another Wild West escapade that includes lots of dastardly villains and comic cliffhangers!
Is it a heap of black rags, is it a dusty tumbleweed, no it’s . . . Now what in shaking shivers will happen next?
Readers will welcome the rip-roaring return of Emily and Jackson as they plot to outwit the dastardly villains bent on catching them at any cost.
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a Newberry medalist and grew up in Anderson, Indiana, and Joliet, Illinois. Naylor worked as a teacher and an editor before she began to write full-time in 1960. She sold her first book for children in 1965 and now lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with her husband, Rex, who is a speech pathologist. They have two grown sons and four grandchildren. Naylor was delighted to create another rollicking Wild West adventure, and says she’s never experienced as much excitement as her character Emily Wiggins.
HORSE DIARIES #9: Tennessee Rose
by Jane Kendall; illustrated by Astrid Sheckels
The next book in the well-loved series, told in first-person narrative straight from the horse’s mouth
Horse lovers are in for a treat! It’s Alabama, 1856. Tennessee Rose is a dark bay Tennessee Walking Horse with a rose-shaped marking on her forehead. She loves dashing around the plantation in the running walk that her breed is famous for, then coming back to her comfortable stall and her friend Levi, the slave boy who is her groom. But as the Civil War approaches, Rosie begins to question plantation life. Is slavery fair? Could Levi be free? Like Black Beauty, this moving novel is told in first person from the horse’s point of view and includes an appendix full of photos and facts about Tennessee Walking Horses and the Civil War.
This book is for anyone who has ever dreamed of hearing a horse’s story—established fans and newcomers alike will be sure to speed through it!
Jane Kendall is the author of Horse Diaries #4: Maestoso Petra, as well as many other titles. She has also illustrated more than two dozen children's books. Jane has been a senior writer for Greenwich Magazine since 1992. She has written for The New York Times on film history and teaches a college-level writing course for the Institute of Children’s Literature. She was an enthusiastic rider growing up, and on one memorable occasion went Christmas caroling on horseback.
THE WONDROUS JOURNALS OF DR. WENDELL WELLINGTON WIGGINS
by Lesley M. M. Blume; illustrated by David Foote
Discover the past world we all forgot—the world that just might hold the key to our future
The journals of Dr. Wendell Wellington Wiggins might just be the most extraordinary contribution to the study of the earth’s past since the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. In the incredible pages of these thought-to-be-lost diaries, Dr. Wiggins—whom we now must consider the greatest paleozoologist of all time—has divulged the secrets of the truly ancient animal world: a world before human beings; a world before dinosaurs; a world that, until now, existed well beyond the outer reaches of human imagination. From deadly Amazonian Whispering Vines (Vitus Sussurus) to curious creatures called Brittle Bones (Futilis Ossis) to a mysterious pet named Gibear (Chiroptera Vicugna Pacosis), the discoveries of Dr. Wiggins will forever change the way we think about the world before us.
Lesley M. M. Blume has authored five children’s books for Knopf, including Modern Fairies, Dwarves, Goblins & Other Nasties. She lives in New York City.
David Foote is a film director, fine artist, animator, and illustrator who envisions the world through a fantastical black-and-white looking glass. He lives in New York City.
GROWING UP MUSLIM
by Sumbul Ali-Karamali
A candid and comprehensive look at what it’s like to grow up Muslim in America
Growing up Muslim in Southern California, Sumbul Ali-Karamali found herself answering questions from friends and schoolmates about her life: What do Muslims eat? Why do they dress the way they do? Why do they pray five times a day? What do their holy days celebrate? Who is Muhammad? What do Muslims believe about him? What are the tenets of Islam?
This book is a comprehensive introduction to one of the world’s major religions. It explores the fundamentals of Islam, Muhammad and his mission, and the Muslim perspective, as well as the development and spread of Islam and current demographics. This enlightening work will provide young readers with essential information about Islam in the everyday context of Muslim life in America, encouraging tolerance and acceptance.
At a time when the Islamic faith is widespread and often misunderstood, this book can be used to open the dialogue and create understanding and tolerance.
Sumbul Ali-Karamali holds a BA from Stanford University and a JD from the University of California, Davis. She earned a graduate degree in Islamic law from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African studies, where she also served as a teaching assistant in Islamic law. Combine the chicken, chicken stock, wine, cilantro, lime juice, garlic, peppercorns, 1 teaspoon of the salt, the oregano, and bay leaves in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow the chicken to cool in the poaching liquid for 45 minutes. Remove the chicken from the cooking liquid and tear or cut into bite-size pieces. Reserve the chicken. Strain the cooking liquid and reserve.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Heat the butter in a large skillet over high heat until foamy. Add the mushrooms, the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and the black pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms release their liquid. Continue to cook until the mushrooms are golden brown and all the liquid has evaporated, about 6 minutes. Sprinkle the mushrooms with the flour, stir to blend, and cook for 1 minute. Add the milk and stir, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan. Cook until the mixture begins to thicken. Add 1 1/2 cups of the reserved chicken cooking liquid, stir, and cook until very thick and flavorful, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.
Place the tortilla chips in the bottom of a 9 by 13-inch glass casserole. Crush the chips with your hands so they form a thin layer on the bottom of the dish. Pour 1 cup of the reserved cooking liquid over the tortilla chips and allow them to soak up the liquid. Scatter the chicken over the top of the tortilla layer. Spread the chopped onions, bell peppers, and jalapenos evenly over the chicken. Top with half of the grated cheeses. Sprinkle with the Southwest Seasoning, chili powder and ground cumin. Spoon the reserved mushroom mixture evenly over the top of the spices, then top with the tomatoes and green chiles. Cover with the remainder of the cheeses. Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and the casserole is heated through. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
Tip: This casserole may be prepared in advance and frozen until ready to use. Simply allow it to thaw 1 day in the refrigerator and come to room temperature before baking.

I was offered a free course to review from My Photo School. As much as I would love, LOVE to take a photography class because I really enjoy photography, I knew I just would not have the time for it. However, I have a brother in law who has recently became very interested in photography and I was able to gift him my course. He is very excited about taking the Light and Exposure class (taught by Mr. Nigel Hicks) that starts next month.
